From the time ofthe Fidel Castro led coup détat in 1959, Cuba has been atloggerheads with the United States. Over the years, every Americanadministration has attempted various diplomatic and economic measuresto destabilize Castro’s grip on power, but none have beenparticularly effective. However, there has been a noticeable thawingin relations between the two countries in recent years, especiallyafter Castro resigned from his position in February 2008 and handedthe presidency to his brother, Raul.
